What Is Varnish Spray?
Varnish sprays are varnishes often preferred over a brush application, where the brush may potentially damage a surface. Varnish sprays are a great alternative and provide the same protecting layer for your artwork that any regular varnishe would. Varnishes protect your artwork from dust, UV rays, discolouration and will make your art stand out (depending on the type of varnish) by producing a glossy, matte or satin finish.
How To Thin Varnish For Spraying?
Fast-evaporating solvent can assist with thinning the varnish. When the solvent dissipates, you will have a very thin layer of varnish which will protect from sag during the drying process. Some examples of solvents include mineral spirits (paint thinner), evaporating naptha, or acetone. Acetone will get the job done the fastest, and is thus recommended. If using acetone, the finish may turn cloudy when applied, but will be clear when it has dried. How much acetone you use will determine how thin the varnish is. There are no downsides to thinning as much as possible. Technique is important when thinning the varnish- one or at the very most two coats a day with a couple of hours of drying time in bewteen is recommended.
